Pro Natura in Bonny: Malaria Awareness Training / Social Baseline Assessment Project

The Malaria Awareness Training / Social Baseline Assessment Project undertaken in rural and remote communities within Bonny Local Government Area led to the successful distribution of 2000 impregnated mosquito bed nets to 21 selected communities representing the 14 houses of the Bonny Kingdom. his project was supported by Overseas Technical Services (Nigeria).

To complement the distribution of mosquito nets, participatory needs assessment exercises were conducted in each of the 21 communities. Out of these, recommendations interventions for a proposed Phase 2 of the project were developed. The most pressing problems that must be addressed in these communities include:

  • Lack of safe and accessible drinking water in most communities,
  • poor educational facilities,
  • lack of electricity in many communities
  • poor health services.

The programme is aimed at building community confidence in Pro Natura International Nigeria and has been implemented in conjunction with a local partnering civil society organisation, Green Life Foundation.

The final report on the project is now available: Click here to download report...

During the exercise, PNI also faciliated a one day workshop on HIV/AIDS, aiming to design a comprehensive action plan that can address the alarming rate of HIV/AIDS cases in Bonny Island . This was supported by Nigeria LNG Ltd.

PNI has developed a further proposal to establish a Development Foundation along the lines of Akassa, Eastern Obolo and Opobo-Nkoro. Work will initially be focused the out-lying, marginalised, remote communities on the Island.
