Eastern Obolo Community Development Foundation
After eight years of work with the Akassa community, Pro-Natura
has introduced community-led development in Eastern Obolo Local
Government Area in Akwa Ibom. Communities in Eastern Obolo have
joined with Pro Natura to establish the Eastern Obolo
Community Development Foundation
Led by an elected steering committee, the foundation’s
mission is to implement development activities selected and defined
by all members of the community using a participatory process.
Little-by-little, this foundation has taken on some of the roles
of local government, and is today recognized by several secondary
stakeholders as being a responsible development agency with whom
they can partner.

In Eastern Obolo the communities selected diverse
projects for their Development Plan, ranging from training to
small infrastructure and health. The individual initiatives include,
amongst others:
- Training traditional mid-wives.
- Construction of latrines.
- Making a cement-lined well.
- Training of micro-credit recipients, for improvement of fishing
technologies (purchase of nets, boat repair) or the development
of vocational skills (purchase of a sewing machine …)
- Computer training.
- Feasibility study on controlling the Nypa palm that is taking
over the mangrove and having a similarly negative effect on
fishing (turning the palms into green charcoal has shown some
potential for further research).
