The Institute for Sustainable Development.
The ISD aims at achieving four principal outcomes:
1. Building the capacity of communities to manage their own development programmes and aspirations through the following:
I. Developing a practical experienced-based curriculum from lessons learnt 'in the field', and developing training programmes designed to promote, facilitate and strengthen participatory community development and also to promote behaviour and practices that are accountable, democratic, and equitable
II. Developing capacity in participatory decision making and participatory governance at a community level.
III. Enhancing facilitation skills required by community members and NGOs involved in sustainable community development activities.
2. Establishing a network of 'living universities'; community owned and managed learning centres to support training for communities aiming to replicating the PNI 'community foundation' model and other successful practises in community development.
3. Conducting participatory research in communities to gather relevant knowledge on socio-economic, social, environmental and other problems effecting local communities for dissemination through journals, seminars and other sustainable development publications.
4. Raise the awareness of government and the private sector on the importance and value of effective democratic governance and participatory community development.
