World Petroleum Council, Social Excellence Award 2008
PNI Nigeria has repeated it success at the World Petroleum Congress by once again being Highly Commended in the Social Responsibility Category for small to medium sized companies, for "Promoting Multiple-Stakeholder Partnering for Better Governance, Development and Peace"
This nomination is in recognition of PNI's innovative multiple-stakeholder partnering approach to community development. With this approach, key stakeholders, including the local community, development agencies and the private sector come together to collaborate in a mutually reinforcing and positive manner.
Whereas the focus of the 2005 award were the achievements of the Akassa Development Foundation, this year, it was the Total Exploration and Production Nigeria (TEPNG) sponsored Eastern Obolo Community Development Foundation that was highlighted as a leading example of multiple stakeholder partnering.
Every year, the Community Development Foundations facilitated by PNI brings representatives from all communities and institutions within the LGA together to discuss and agree their priorities for an LGA wide Development Plan. The CDF is on-hand to facilitate the process and is then responsible for implementing the project selected by the community in conjunction with the relevant village authority or institution. The entire process is community managed which ensures full community ownership of projects undertaken. The CDF provides all support and assistance that is required and ensures that there is full transparency and accountability for all funds allocated.
PNI Nigeria's entry into the WPC Social Responsibility Award was supported by Elf Petroleum Nigeria Limited and Total. On hand to receive the award was Chief Bill Knight OBE, PNI Executive Director from 1997- 2007 and Jason Sali, PNI Nigeria's Technical Director. PNI's presence at the WPC in Madrid was kindly supported by Centrica Resources Nigeria Ltd (CRNL) and Total.
