Opobo-Nkoro Community Development Foundation

After eight years of work with the Akassa community, Pro-Natura has introduced community-led development in Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area in Rivers State. Communities in Opobo and Nkoro have joined with Pro Natura to establish the Opobo-Nkoro Community Development Foundation

The Opobo-Nkoro Community Development Foundation has overcome many challenges, including the culture of suspicion and mistrust. Training and capacity building by PNI-Nigeria has enabled them to start to make a positive impact within their community. In Opobo-Nkoro the communities selected diverse projects for its Development Plan ranging from training to small infrastructure and health. The individual initiatives include, amongst others:

  • Training traditional mid-wives.
  • Construction of latrines.
  • Creation of a women’s resource centre.
  • Making a cement-lined well.
  • Training of micro-credit recipients, for improvement of fishing technologies (purchase of nets, boat repair) or the development of artisanal crafts (purchase of a sewing machine …)
  • Creation of a laboratory for the fight against
    tuberculosis.
  • Computer training.
